It’s not yet official, however it appears that New Jersey smashed a World record on Sat. Aug. 20, 2022 in the Paddle For The Bay Event held in Pine Beach.
More than 1,200 kayaks, as well as quite a few canoes, were paddled along the Toms River in Pine Beach for more than a mile as part of Paddle for the Bay, organized by Sandy Rinderer. Participants came from as far away as Ohio and vacationers from California extended their trip to the area so that they could participate.
Save The Barnegat Bay, a non-profit organization, will receive the entry fees paid by the registrants of the event. The organization is marking it's 50th year in 2022. Founded in 1971, the organization's mission is to restore and protect the Barnegat Bay and its ecosystem.
Neighboring towns assisted by providing EMS services, underwater search and rescue teams and equipment as well as fire department personnel and equipment.
Several local running clubs and yacht clubs volunteered to assist with registration and documentation of the event.
There was even an appearance from the River Lady paddle boat as well as one participant playing the bagpipes as he floated on the water.
The weather was perfect for the event and the colorful kayaks accented the waters beautifully.
It will be a number of months before the results are certified by the Guinness officials, so until then, fingers crossed.
